Stephanie Miner NSCA Shoot

The Del Monte Gun Club, an Adamson Award winner, asked what they could do to help make a dream come true. At the time, the Stephanie L. Miner Women’s Imaging Center was just a dream. Today it is a reality thanks in part to the Del Monte Gun Club and their fundraising support through their annual clay shoot. Member Tom Reeves said, “The members of the Del Monte Gun Club feel that every organization in this Valley should have to give back to the community.” And they have done just that. Since 2004, the Del Monte Gun Club has raised over $40,000.00 for the hospital. Because of their dedication, this has become one of the major shooting events here in the Valley. The Imaging Center was completed in 2006. Proceeds have since been used to start and maintain the CARE Fund which helps women financially with their healthcare needs. Some of which include assistance for procedures such as mammograms, breast and pelvic ultrasounds, breast MRIs and hysterectomies. The Del Monte Gun Club continues their efforts because, as Reeves states, “we love the cause and we’re going to keep doing it. It is a real labor of love.”

The Stephanie L. Miner Women's Center has state of the art medical equipment and technology located within an atmosphere assuring quiet and privacy.  The Center is located just off of the main lobby of the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center.  Through community contributions and grant funding from DOLA, Caring for Colorado, and the Boettcher Foundation, the Center was designed for the services they will house, including; mammography, bone densitometry, and ultrasound.  All of these services have had equipment upgrades through this project and proudly serve patients with the latest in technology.  The Center also has a resource library and consult room which carry the same private theme of the Women’s ImagingCenter and have vast information available, as well as prosthetics, wigs and other post cancer care items.

Why is the Center named after Stephanie Miner?

Stephanie L. (Motz) Miner (1958-2003), a valued community member, public teacher, wife and mother of four died in October of 2003 after a four year battle with breast cancer.  Stephanie’s story is not unlike others we hear.

One year after delivering her fourth child Stephanie discovered a lump in her breast.  Because there was not a family history of breast cancer, it was thought to be a blocked milk duct of a nursing mother.  Unfortunately, Stephanie later discovered that it was breast cancer.

Once diagnosed, Stephanie and her family immersed themselves to learn the most current information on fighting the disease.  Stephanie believed the fight against cancer was best waged thought an alliance of patients, survivors, and professionals.

Stephanie L. Miner represents how important prevention, early detection, and most importantly, regular physician visits are to our community residents.

The fight against this disease must be waged with education, technology, and support.
